Banska Bystrica - and the region of Central Slovakia ...
Welcome in the city of Banska Bystrica. This old city is situated in the same centre of the central Slovakia, under the Low Tatras. The region is full of beautiful ski resorts. Nearest ski resorts to the city are Ski Tajov and Ski Kraliky. Other possibilities for skiing you can also find near the village of Selce in the eastern part of Banska Bystrica. The largest ski resort of Donovaly is situated in the northern part of the city. The mountainous region of Donovaly is also the gateway to the High Tatras and to the region of Liptov. All mountains around the city of Banska Bystrica have very good opportunities for tourist walkings, skiing and also for camping. Camping is prohibited in open forest or nature reservations and is allowed only in camping sites.
The ancient city of Banska Bystrica is full of nice buildings, historic monuments, cultural places and also museums. In the centre is situated the Museum of Slovak National Uprising with its exponates from the Second World War
The accommodation in the city is possible in some of many small hotels or hostels.
The culture in the city is very rich. Jazz festival “Dixieland” in the Spring each year, international film festival “Envirofilm” each year and also some sporadic concerts are usually held in the city main square (walking zone).

Safety in the city: During the night hours it is not very safe to walk especially in the dirty Coach Station, as there you can meet some dangerous people. During football matches in local stadium you can see lot of policemen in the city, but it is not very recommended to join some dangerous fans.
Eating and Drinking: In the city you can find many popular restauranst and bars, offering international cuisine and also all traditional meals. The eating is not very expensive, especially during the lunch hours 11:30 - 13:00, where you can have starter + main dish + drink in the price of one meal (usually main dish).
Tourist walkings are recommended only with good tourist map, which you can get in the city centre in Information Centre. For any useful information please ask also there. Do not forget to take the number from them if you are going to visit mountains. Also if you are accommodated in a hotel, please do not forget to tell the receptionist that you are going to visit mountains and when you are going back to hotel. Slovakia has one of the best Mountain Rescue Systems in the world, so in any case they will be able to help you.
